THE TRIUMPH OF SPACE HERO ALAN SHEPARD News of the Day presents, in glowing tribute, the drama of a U. S. astronaut breaking the space barrier. Propelled by its 78,000-pound-thrust Redstone booster, Navy Commander Shepard's 2,300-pound capsule travels down range 302 miles in 15 minutes, at a speed of 4,500 miles an hour and an altitude of 115 miles. During his memorable space venture, Shepard actually controls his flight and reports back by radio on every detail. Re-entering the earth's atmosphere, the capsule is floated by parachute to the ocean beneath, where Shepard is hoisted into a helicopter and transferred to the aircraft carrier Lake Champlain. Following extensive physical examinations at Grand Bahama Island, Astronaut Shepard comes to Washington to be hailed by President Kennedy and the nation. He receives the Distinguished Service Medal of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and is accorded a hero's reception on a drive to the Capitol. He climaxes his day of days with a news conference- where the consensus is that space pioneer Shepard is "A-OK!".
